Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in Vancouver

Target pigmentation, redness and sun damage with IPL.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a light-based treatment that can address multiple complexion concerns in a single session. It uses broad-spectrum light to selectively target pigment and vascular changes beneath the skin’s surface, improving clarity and overall tone. With precision and minimal downtime, IPL is well suited for treating sun damage, redness and early signs of aging on the face, neck, chest and hands.

How does IPL work?

IPL emits controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light that penetrate the skin without harming the surface. Specific wavelengths are absorbed by melanin or hemoglobin, causing targeted pigment or vessels to break down. These are then cleared naturally by the body’s repair processes. This selective photothermolysis also stimulates dermal fibroblasts, promoting collagen remodeling and contributing to improved skin texture over time.

What to expect during your treatment

An IPL session typically lasts 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the treatment area. A cooling gel is applied for comfort, and a handheld device delivers light pulses that may feel like a quick snap against the skin. A series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart is generally recommended for optimal results. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year can help sustain improvements.

What does IPL treat?

IPL can address hyperpigmentation, melasma (in select cases), freckles, redness from rosacea, broken capillaries and mottled skin tone. It can also improve textural changes associated with photoaging and stimulate collagen to enhance skin firmness. Treatment areas include the face, neck, chest and hands, as well as other sun-exposed areas.

Recovery and results

Recovery from IPL is minimal. Temporary redness or mild swelling may occur for several hours post-treatment. Pigmented areas often darken before flaking or fading over the following days, while redness gradually subsides. Skin clarity and texture continue to improve over several weeks as collagen remodels. With proper sun protection, results can last many months, and medical oversight ensures safe, precise treatment tailored to your skin type and concerns.
